History of Veterinary Medicine

The first veterinary education in Turkey began in 1842 by a Prussian military veterinarian named Godlewsky in Istanbul with 12 students for a duration of 3 years. Classes were held at the War School in Maçka in 1849, at Taşkışla in 1853, and at the Military Medical School in Galatasaray in 1873. The first Veterinary Rüştiye was established in 1886. Students who graduated from this Rüştiye were entitled to go to the military İdadiye in Çengelköy and then to the Veterinary School. The Veterinary School was moved in 1905 to one wing of the newly constructed Medical School building in the Haydarpaşa district. On the other hand, the first civilian Veterinary School was established in 1889. It graduated its first students in 1893, among whom was the poet Mehmet Akif Ersoy.

In 1894, the Mülkiye Baytar Mekteb-i Alisi was established in Istanbul.

In 1909, for the first time, a group of veterinarians was sent to Europe for a 2-year specialization.

In 1920, civilian and military Veterinary Schools were merged under the name "Baytar Mekteb-i Alisi" and moved to the buildings in Selimiye.

In 1928, the name of the school was changed to "Yüksek Baytar Mektebi".

In 1933, the school in Istanbul was moved to Ankara under the name "Baytar Fakültesi". And education began to be conducted better with modern facilities.

In June 1937, the term "Baytar" was replaced by the term "Veterinary Physician". The name of the Baytar Faculty was also changed to Veterinary Faculty. In 1934, scientific terms transitioned from Arabic to Latin.

In 1939, the duration of education was extended to 5 years.

In 1948, the Veterinary Faculty was incorporated into Ankara University.

Subsequently, from the 1960s to the present, Veterinary Faculties have been established in Elazığ, Istanbul, Bursa, Konya, Van, Kars, Aydın, Burdur, Diyarbakır, Urfa, Hatay, Kırıkkale, Afyon, Kayseri, Samsun, Sivas, and Balıkesir provinces in succession.
