Within the Department of Histology and Embryology of Burdur Mehmet Akif Ersoy University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, there are 3 faculty members and 2 teaching staff. The Department, as one of the basic science fields of veterinary medicine education, continues its educational and research activities aimed at understanding the microscopic structures of tissues and organs in animals and the processes of embryonic development.
In our Department, the main courses of General Histology, Histology and Embryology I, and Histology and Embryology II are conducted within the undergraduate program. These courses are supported by a number of practical classes equivalent to the theoretical class hours, aiming for students to reinforce their knowledge practically. Additionally, elective courses and multidisciplinary courses suitable for students' veterinary medicine education and areas of interest are also offered. Among these courses are Stem Cells, Microscopic Techniques, Fish Anatomy and Histology, Plant Biology and Toxic Plants, Communication and Professional Skills.
During the educational process, visual and application-based teaching methods are effectively utilized. The laboratory infrastructure of the Department is structured to support educational and research activities. Thanks to the integrated high-resolution camera system in the student application laboratory, the live image examined by the instructor under the microscope is instantly reflected on five screens located at different points in the laboratory. Students can follow every detail simultaneously on the screens and each performs their individual applications on their own microscopes.
Moreover, many theoretical and practical courses suitable for basic education and academic study areas are provided by the faculty members of the department for graduate students. Our graduate students regularly participate in our department, actively continuing their academic studies and research in the laboratory environment.
Our department has a dynamic research environment characterized by projects supported by organizations outside of Higher Education Institutions, such as TÜBİTAK, as well as university (BAP) supported projects. Within the scope of our Department's research activities, studies are conducted in many fields such as Reproductive Biology, Embryology, Epigenetics, and Reproductive Toxicology, and these studies are mostly carried out within the framework of multidisciplinary approaches. In our laboratory, the fundamental and specialized techniques required by modern science; immunohistochemical (IHC) and histochemical staining, fluorescent staining techniques, Western blotting analyses, and routine and special histological monitoring methods are successfully applied. In addition to the academic staff working in the Department, graduate students also regularly participate in the research laboratory, actively contributing to scientific knowledge production.
The Department of Histology and Embryology aims to train veterinarians and researchers who adopt a scientific research culture, can think analytically, are committed to ethical values, and are professionally equipped. It sees continuously improving educational and research activities, increasing interdisciplinary collaborations, and promoting scientific productivity as its fundamental goals.
